Brigadier General Telford Taylor has served as Chief of Counsel for War Crimes and as Chief Prosecutor for the United States since 25 October 1946.

Since the close of the Second World War, trials of individual persons charged with the commission of "war crimes" have been held on a scale which is quite without precedent in recorded history.

"SUBSEQUENT PROCEEDINGS" OF THE NURNBERG WAR CRIMES TRIALS
All 177 defendants tried in the series of 12 war crimes trials held at Nurnberg following the International Military Tribunal were represented by competent legal counsel of their own

The Office of Chief of Counsel for War Crimes, established 25 October 1946, indicted 185 Germans for war crimes. Of this number, a total of 177 were tried in Nurnberg proceedings held subsequent to the International Military Tribunal.
