OpenAthens Access Bookmarklet

When following a link from the open web, UGA School of Law faculty, staff or students may need to authenticate to that resource's website using OpenAthens before they can access the content. A bookmarklet method is a simple way to do this.

How to install:

  • Use 1 of 3 Browsers: Bookmarklets can be installed on Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Microsoft's Edge and Internet Explorer browser's do not support bookmarklets.
  • Turn Bookmark Toolbar On: You may need to first turn your Bookmarks toolbar on so you can view it beneath the URL.
  • Install the Bookmarklet: Drag the above graphical "bookmarklet" icon onto your browser's bookmark toolbar to install it.
  • Customize It: When dragging into your Bookmark toolbar a pop-up window should allow you to customize it. We recommend you title it something you can remember like "OpenAthens Access".
  • Try It Out: When you try to access a resource and cannot get in (for example, from Google Scholar you find a HeinOnline article), after clicking to load the article, next click your bookmark. The page should refresh prompting UGA's SSO login if needed, then providing access!

Errors or troubleshooting:

If you get an OpenAthens "We are sorry that we cannot complete your request" error page, that indicates that the resource is not set up to use OpenAthens. Contact a librarian if you believe this is an error and share a copy of the link or resource you are trying to access and we will troubleshoot with you!
