The legal industry has been using conventional/rudimentary AI for years now. These technologies include eDiscovery platforms, data analytics tools, legal research platforms, and advanced case citators.
The use of AI tools empowered by Large Language Models (mainly ChatGPT) by the industry has been enthusiastic for PR purposes, but its practical impact on day-to-day operations or on the industry as a whole is still developing. Developments in this field are limited by several factors: strictly controlled access for the purpose of testing, the proprietary nature of certain applications, the rapid pace at which the technology has been developing, concerns over use of privileged information in training data, and lack of guidance from the ABA and state bars.
We have gathered available information about the recent interest/adoption of artificial intelligence by the legal industry, below. Additionally, we have included a list of current AI-powered tools for the legal industry. Note that this includes tools beyond CPT-3/4 powered chatbots.
Some firms have expressed interest in generative AI being able to provide first drafts of documents for them, hopefully saving time and freeing up attorneys to focus on more complex tasks.
